The Jones SWCD is offering bare root stock for sale. No guarantee can be given for the trees, except that they will be in good condition when they are distributed in April. Profits are used to support the District's outreach and education efforts in Jones County. Supplies are limited so order early. Final deadline for ordering trees is March 29st. Note that sizes vary between species. Print out the online Tree Order Form or pick up a form at the office. Interesting facts about the trees and shrubs are at Tree Info.

The Conservation Districts of Iowa (CDI) is sponsoring the scholarship program again this year. The scholarships will be presented to Iowa high school seniors to be used for their first year of education on the college level while pursuing programs of study in any field of agriculture or natural resources. This is a broad field. A marine biologist is just as qualified to apply as someone wanting to pursue animal science. One never knows where an education might take our future leaders. Please note that the scholarship application is online at http://www.cdiowa.org/awards.html where students can completely fill it out before printing. High school seniors must have their applications in their local Soil and Water Conservation District office no later than March 1st.

2010 "Conservation Habits = Healthy Habitats" Poster Contest

Each year the Conservation Districts of Iowa hold a Soil and Water Conservation Poster Contest. This year, 2010, our theme is "Conservation Habits = Healthy Habitats". Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and Conservation Districts of Iowa are co-sponsors of this contest. Competition is open to all children who are residents of Iowa from kindergarten through 12th grade. The winning poster then competes in the Regional contest. The deadline for the posters to be submitted to the local Soil and Water Office is March 31, 2010. Sometimes teachers are so busy with their curriculum that they are unable to encourage students to compete, but students can compete individually as well as through their class. For more information you can contact your local office at 319-462-3196 Ext 3. You can speak with the secretary and she can mail the rules out to you or you can stop by our office in the USDA Service Center at 300 Chamber Drive in Anamosa, and pick up the rules and visit our office.
